Laboratory Objective

  • Environmental Geochemistry (inorganic & organic) focusing on:
    • Geochemistry of lignite and lignitic ashes
    • Pedology in regards with the soil remediation of mines
    • Behaviour of heavy/toxic metals and organic toxic compounds in soils and underground waters
    • Adsorption of organic compounds and heavy metals in industrial minerals – emphasis in wastes
    • Geochemistry of heavy and toxic metals in sea sediments
  • Soil Geochemistry
  • Organic Geochemistry of coals and hydrocarbons with emphasis in bio-indicators
  • Analysis of pigments and plasters in wall paintings and other works of art

Research and Development Projects

  1. Geochemical analysis of soils from the Kozani-Ptolemaida area (1995-today).
  2. Leaching tests of chemical elements from lignite fly ash piles of the power station in Ptolemais area. Effects in soils and underground waters.
  3. Monitoring of soil fertility in landfills developed on abandoned lignite mines. Behaviour of heavy and toxic metals on soil solutions and their consequences on various cultivations.
  4. Trace elements in Greek lignites.
  5. Study of the diagenesis of shales and sand stones as a function of the burial depth, in core samples from the wider area of Northern Aegean. Effect of diagenesis on the research and exploitation of the H/C deposits.
